THE
CHURCH IN PERGAMUM (REVELATION 2:12-17)

INTRODUCTION:
A. We live in a world of compromise.
1. When we buy a new car, or a house, we make compromises.
2. Our political system works because of compromise.
B. Pergamum was a church that was
compromising with the world.
1. Pergamum held to the teachings of Balaam.
2. Pergumum also held to the teaching of the Nicolatitans.
1. THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM (REVELATION 2:12-13).
A. The one who writes to Pergamum
(Revelation 2:12).
1. This is no meek and gentle Jesus who writes this letter.
2. This is Jesus, the one with the sharp two-edged sword of judgment (Revelation 2:12).
B. The condition of the church in
Pergamum (Revelation 2:13).
1. They dwelled where Satan's throne was --- they lived in a society full of
evil.
2. They held fast to the name of Jesus --- Pergamum knew Jesus was Lord.
3. They didn't deny their faith --- Pergamum still believed in Jesus.
2. THE PROBLEMS AT PERGAMUM (REVELATION 2:14-17).
A. The problem of compromise
(Revelation 2:14-15).
1. Some, not all, held to the teaching of Balaam (Revelation 2:14).
a. This teaching of compromise was a stumbling block to Israel.
b. This teaching led to adultery and immorality.
2. Some, not all, held to the teachings of the Nicolaitans (Revelation
2:15).
B. What Pergamum needed to do
(Revelation 2:16-17).
1. Repent or Jesus would make war on them (Revelation2:16-17).
2. Let the Spirit lead them to overcome (Revelation 2:17).
a. They will be given an new name.
b. They will be given a white stone --- vindicated in their cause.
CONCLUSION:
A. We cannot compromise with the
world.
1. It's easy to go along to get along.
2. We are called to be faithful to Jesus till death.
B. Will you come to Jesus now?
