Characters:
Adam, Eve, Serpent, Voice of God.
Bible text: Genesis 2
Scene
I. In
the Garden
Voice of God:
you wish of the fruit of all the trees except
the tree of knowledge of good
and evil which is in the middle of the garden. The day you eat of it you
will surely die.
Adam:
This is a beautiful place. I
shall keep it and dress it.
(Adam leaves. Enter
Serpent.)
Scene
II.
Serpent:
Hello,
Eve. Isn’t this a lovely place to
live?
Eve:
Oh, yes, it really is.
Serpent:
Did God tell you that you could eat of every tree in the garden?
Eve:
We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden except the one in the
middle. God said, “You shall not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.”
Serpent:
You shall not surely die. God
knows the day you eat of it you will be like
God and know good from evil.
Eve:
Is that true?
(She looks at the tree)
The fruit does look pretty.
I’m sure it is good to eat. If
it will make me
wise, I would like to try it.
Serpent:
Go ahead. Try it.
(Eve picks a piece of fruit and takes a bite.)
Eve:
It is good, I must give Adam some.
Serpent:
Well, I will see you later. Goodbye.
(Serpent leaves.)
Scene
III.
Eve:
Adam, come here.
Adam:
What is it?
Eve: I have just eaten of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, and
it is really
good. Take a bite.
Adam:
Oh, should I?
Eve:
Oh, yes, come on.
(Adam eats.)
Adam:
I think I hear God walking. Let’s hide!
Voice
of God: Why are afraid? Have you eaten of the fruit that I said you should not?
Adam:
The woman you gave me brought me a piece and gave it to me.
Voice
of God: Eve, what
have you done?
Eve:
Well, the serpent talked me into eating it.
Voice of God: I am going to punish every one of you. Serpent, you will have to crawl on
your stomach from now on. Adam, you will have to work and sweat to
make a
living. I will cause weeds and
thorns to grow in the fields to make
your work hard. Eve, I will make you have to suffer much pain and you
will be ruled over by your husband. Now all of you get out of the garden
before you eat of the tree of life and live forever in sin. You can’t ever get
back in to the garden because I will put
cherubims with flaming torches at
the
gate. Be gone!
