The Good Samaritan

Characters:  Jesus, lawyer, man, two robbers, priest, Levite, Samaritan, Innkeeper

Properties:  Black scarves for robbers, robes, water bottle, bandages, rag for washingwounds, money for Samaritan to give Innkeeper.

Bible text:  Luke: 10:25-38

 

Scene I

Jesus and the Lawyer

 

Lawyer:            What should one do to have eternal life, Master?

Jesus:               What does the Law say?

Lawyer:            Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself.

Jesus:               You are right.

Lawyer:            Master, who is my neighbor?

Jesus:               I’ll explain with this story about a man going from Jerusalem down to Jericho.

 

Scene II

Man on Road with Robbers

 

(Enter man, two robbers come out, knock him down, leave man on floor, disappear.)

Man (groans):   Help, help, Oh, Oh!

Enter Priest:      (Looks at man groaning) I’m sorry I don’t have time to stop and see if he needs help.  (Priest goes on)

Enter Levite:     Poor man, I’d like to help him, but if I stop someone may run out and kill me. (Levite goes on)

Enter Samaritan:           Sir, you need help.  Let me give you a drink.  (Gives a drink.)  I’ll wash your wounds, and dress your sores.  Now come, I’ll help you upon my donkey and we’ll go to the Inn.

 

Scene III

At the Inn

Innkeeper in the door of the Inn.  Enter Samaritan, and man.

Samaritan:                    Sir, this poor man was robbed, wounded and left on a lonely road to die.  He needs a place to stay until he is able to travel.

Man:                            I can’t stay for I have no money.  The robbers took all my money.

Innkeeper:                    It costs something to stay here, you know.

Samaritan:                    Here, I’ll pay it all.  If this isn’t enough, I’ll pay the rest when I return.  Give him anything he needs.

Innkeeper:                    You are truly a good Samaritan.

Man:                            Thank you very much.

 

Scene IV

Jesus and the Lawyer

 

Jesus:                           Now, lawyer, which one of the men was neighbor to the wounded man?

Lawyer:                        The one who helped him, the good Samaritan.

Jesus:                           You are right.  Go and do the same thing.

 

End
