The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. (Genesis 2:7-8)

God told man that he could eat from any tree in the garden, but the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God told the man if he ate of the tree of knowledge he would die. God decided that it was not good for man to be alone, so he made a helper suitable for man. He told man to name all the animals and whatever man called them would be their name. So, man gave names to all the animals on the land, in the sea, and in the sky, but no suitable helper for man (Adam) was found.

God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs. God made a woman from the rib he took from the man and he brought her to the man. The man called his companion "woman" because she was taken out of man. (Genesis 2:16-23)
